Hey there! So you decided you wanted to have some family photos done. You did the research and found the photographer who is going to uniquely and genuinely capture photos of your family, but you’re not sure where to go from there to make sure the shoot is a success. Don’t worry, that’s where I come in! Here is a Boston family photographers top five tips to survive (and thrive) during your family photo shoot:
Plan outfits (click here if you need some inspo), make nail/hair/make-up appointments, and make a list of what you want to bring with you to the shoot (blankets, kiddo’s favorite toys, etc).
2. Take your time!
Don’t jam pack the day before the shoot. Give yourself two times the amount of time it usually takes to get ready and make sure the kiddos had some down time before the shoot so they are not grumpy or tired.
3. Don’t Dress the Kiddos Ahead of Time!
If you have to drive to the shoot location and your child/children get carsick, don’t dress them in their photoshoot outfits until you arrive. Alternatively, you can bring back up outfits. This is really important if you have a newborn prone to spitting up!
4. Bring Snacks!
Make sure to bring some nutritious, yummy, and non-messy snacks with you to the shoot. A hungry kiddo = a grumpy kiddo. Hydration is also a must, don’t forget those water bottles!
5. Relax and Follow the Kid’s Lead!
Your shoot is here! Now it is time to let go of all the planning and just relax. Enjoy your family, focus on your kids and partner! I’m there to make sure we get the shots and locations. From time to time, kiddos get over taking pictures and I find the way to get them excited is allowing them to be an active participant in the shoot. Some of my favorite family photos are the kiddos’ ideas, like running around or going down a slide!
